Thompson Creek Molybdenum Mine Project

Challis, Idaho
Client: Morrison-Knudson
Owners: Cyprus Mine

The Thompson Creek Mine, near Challis, Idaho, is one of the four largest open pit, primary molybdenum mines in the world. The mine property covers 2,500 acres and includes an open pit, mill and tailings facility.

The Project included building an open pit molybdenum mine, a primary crushing facility, a conveying system, and a ball mill and ore concentrator. Fall Line provided site-wide Quality Control inspection and testing of construction materials and non-destruction testing for the laboratory providing testing services. Additional facilities included an assay laboratory, shop facilities and an office complex. Site work consisted of building the road system up the mountain, creating the open pit mine by excavating the overburden, and building the primary tailings impoundment and multiple dams to control runoff from the site. Over 8 million cubic yards of material was moved to build the mine operating complex.
